What are common approaches by users to try to understand the DB tables that seem to only be somewhat documented in the data admin guide? The canned reports don't cut it when it comes to trend reporting for example, and understanding these tables with what little documentation there is presents a real road block.

So, what is everybody else doing to fully understand the underlying data structure enough to create compicated SQL against them?
